Sure, the golden days of summer may be fading into the sunset faster than any of us like, but the call of the beach is still very strong, especially here on the West Coast.

Whether you’re popping by Kits Beach to stick your toes in the sand after a long day at work or trekking down to Wreck Beach to make the most of balmy weekends, Rebecca Tay presents five beach bags that bid adieu to summer in style.

Made in Japan, this plaid bag by Amiacalva has not one, not two, but four straps: One set of long handles for slinging the bag over your shoulder for errands or exploring, and a short set for keeping things a little closer to hand. With two different types of plaid, it’s a cute statement piece that will transition effortlessly from summer beach days to fall city outings.

Born in California and now based in Upstate New York, Shaina Mote’s eponymous brand is all about simple, purposeful pieces that transcend trends and time. Case in point: this “Cebu” market bag, which was made in Peru and features button closures and adjustable handles that make it much more unique than the bog-standard, dime-a-dozen versions out there. We like to think of it as a beautiful, delicate take on a classic.

Gone are the days when we clamour for a free tote bag: These days, said bag has to be très cool, a brand we adore, or have some other super unique selling feature for us to consider adding it to our mountain of totes. This baby blue style fits the bill: it’s made of mesh, so it’s easy to wipe down and keep clean, has long enough straps to wear as a shoulder bag, and is practical for shaking sand and pebbles out — especially great if you spend a lot of time in playgrounds and toting snacks around.

Oak + Fort, ca.oakandfort.com | $38 ($16)

If you’re an accessory purist, chances are, you believe that a beach bag needs to be woven. If so, then you’ll appreciate this chic, cheap and cheerful option — not least because you probably also think a beach bag needs to be big enough for everything you need to spend the whole day on the sand: towel, water bottle, swimsuit, sandals, SPF, magazine — and probably a change of clothing for later, too.

Joe Fresh, joefresh.com | $24 ($19.94)

This walnut-shaped bag by American brand Ines isn’t a beach bag, per se, but it’s such an elegant option we couldn’t help but fall in love with its sculptural shape and chic black accents. Handmade in France and Ghana from natural fibres and vegetable-tanned leather, it’s a super-stylish option if your idea of an end-of-summer beach holiday involves a lot more time on a yacht than on the sand.
