Hurricane season can be a nerve-wracking time for Central Florida residents. With the unpredictable nature of tropical storms and hurricanes, being prepared is paramount. One crucial item in your hurricane preparedness kit is sandbags, which can help protect your home and property from flooding. If you're wondering where to find sandbags in Central Florida, we've got you covered.

Orange County Public Works is making sandbags available to residents preparing for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Idalia.

Five sandbag locations will open to residents on Monday, August 28, 2023, beginning at noon.

The Parks and Recreation Division and the Public Works Department will have bags and sand available on a self-serve basis. Residents will need to bring their own shovel or spade to fill their bags. Orange County will provide 10 unfilled sandbags and direct residents to the sand pile.

Individuals with special needs who need sandbag assistance should contact Orange County 311 beginning Monday, August 28, 2023, at noon.

Sites will operate on Monday, August 28, 2023, from 12 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, August. 29, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., pending severe weather. Locations are subject to close earlier than scheduled due to weather conditions.

Seminole County has established sandbag operations at various locations, making it convenient for residents to access this resource. Here are the Seminole County sandbag locations:

Boombah Sports Complex (Overflow Parking Lot)

Open: Monday, August 28, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

City of Altamonte Springs - Eastmonte Park

City of Altamonte Springs - Westmonte Recreation Center

City of Winter Springs - Central Winds Park

At these locations, empty sandbags and dirt will be available for all Seminole County residents. However, it's important to note that residents should bring their shovel and gloves and be prepared to fill and load the bags themselves. Due to the weight of filled sandbags, which can be around 30 pounds, it's recommended to bring a partner along to assist you. Please be aware that staff at these locations cannot provide assistance in filling the bags.

Sandbags are available at seven Lake County locations beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28. Residents must bring their own shovels and are limited to 10 bags of sand per household. Residents should bring their own shovels and are responsible for filling their own bags. Sandbags will only be offered before the storm – no sandbags will be dispensed once storm conditions begin.

Open at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 28. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels as they will need to fill their own bags.

Polk County will have a number of sandbag locations open on Monday, August 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Volusia County - Road and Bridge Facility, Osteen

Volusia County - Volusia County Jail

- Address: 1300 Red John Road, Daytona Beach

Open: Monday, August 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pre-filled bags, 5 per vehicle.

City of Daytona Beach - Bethune Point Park

Open: Monday, August 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Residents are asked to bring their own shovel to fill sandbags. There is no charge for sandbags and there is a 10-bag limit per vehicle. If demand and conditions warrant, sandbag operations will be extended Tuesday.

City of DeBary - DeBary City Hall

Open: Monday, August 28, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Residents should bring their own shovel and identification.

City of DeLand - parking lot of Melching Field

- Address: 601 South Woodland Boulevard, DeLand

Open: Monday, August 28, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per residence and this is only open to DeLand residents. Proof of residence will be required, and DeLand is asking people to bring their own shovels. Hours have not been determined for Tuesday sandbagging operations.

City of Deltona - Festival Park

Open: Monday, August 28, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City of Deltona

- Address: 2931 Day Road, Deltona

Deltona sandbag operations are self-service, and residents will need to bring their own shovels.

City of Edgewater - Fire Station 57

- Address: 2628 Hibiscus Drive, Edgewater

Open: 24 hours a day

City of Edgewater - Mango Tree Lake

- Address: 901 Mango Tree Drive, Edgewater

Open: 24 hours a day. Will be staffed for sandbag distribution on Monday, August 28, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, August 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Residents should bring their own shovels and bags outside of staffed hours. The Fire Station 57 location will not be staffed. Sandbags can be purchased at local home supply centers, or residents can use double-bagged, heavy-duty garbage bags.

City of Orange City - Waggin' Trail Dog Park

- Address: 1201 S. Leavitt Avenue, Orange City

Open: Monday, August 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Residents are asked to bring their own shovels and identification. Limit of 10 sandbags per household. The site will remain open after 4:00 p.m. if demand is high.

City of New Smyrna Beach - Sports Complex

Sand and fillable bags are available to New Smyrna Beach residents at the Sports Complex on 2335 Sunset Dr. You will need to show proof of residency in order to receive sandbags.

City staff will provide a roll of 15 bags to residents from noon until 6 p.m. on Monday, and again between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Sand piles will remain available to residents after hours through Wednesday, August 30. You must bring your own shovel.

City of Ormond Beach - Nova Community Center

- Address: 440 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach

Open: Monday, August 28 - Saturday, September 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day.

This is a self-service sand pile. Residents must bring their own shovel, identification, and there is a limit of 10 bags per residence.

City of Ponce Inlet - Ponce Inlet Community Center

- Address: 4670 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet

Open: Monday, August 28, and Tuesday, August 29, from 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 6:00 p.m.

Residents must bring an ID and their own shovel. There is a limit of 10 bags per resident. Hurricane passes will also be available.

City of Port Orange - outside REC Center

- Address: 4655 City Center Circle, Port Orange

Open: Monday, August 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Hours could change depending on weather. This is a self-service site. Residents must bring your identification and a shovel. Staff will provide bags for use. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per person.

City of South Daytona - Piggotte Community Center

Open: Monday, August 28, from 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 6:00 p.m.

Residents are asked to bring proof of residency.

Flagler County - Hidden Trails Community Center, Bunnell

- Address: 6108 Mahogany Boulevard, Bunnell

Open: Monday, August 28, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Flagler County - Bay Drive Park, Palm Coast

Open: Monday, August 28, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, August 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Flagler Beach - Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church

Open: Monday, August 28 through Tuesday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m.

The Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church sandbag location is operating on a self-service and first come, first serve basis.

County sandbag locations will be open Monday, August 28, 2023, from noon to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 7:00 a.m. until weather conditions prohibit operation.

All sandbag locations are self-service. Bags will be provided for residents.

Residents can pick up sandbags at Osceola Heritage Park at 1211 Shakerag Road, Kissimmee between noon and 7:00 p.m. on Monday, and again between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Residents can get up to 25 bags and must bring their own shovel.
