STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Toss the beach bag, grab an umbrella. New York City will be hit by rain sporadically all day Friday, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Isaac Longley.
Currently, there will be a cold front dropping across the northeast, creating some rain showers and thunderstorms in the New York City area. Friday afternoon, the storm system will be reaching Staten Island, causing rainy weather with “some possible” hail.
“You are going to see those thunderstorms move in, likely after 5 p.m.,” said Longley. “I do think the greatest threat for any strong or severe thunderstorms is going to be mainly across Northern New Jersey and across the Hudson Valley as well.”
The meteorologist predicted that on Friday there will be risk of “damaging winds,” of up to 50 or 60 mph, and flooding associated with the downpour as well.
Longley noted that there could be some widespread showers beginning at approximately 7 a.m. Friday and eventually leading into a 5 p.m. thunderstorm in the borough. None of the rain during the daytime hours is expected to be severe.
Will this weather affect the weekend?

“Looking ahead to the weekend, it actually looks fantastic across the area,” Longley says. “We will dry up rather quickly on Saturday and have a drier air mass — which is much more comfortable and pleasant.”
Saturday will be a great day to exchange the rain umbrella for a beach umbrella because clear skies and sun is in the forecast, with temperatures rising up into the mid 80s.
